over the weekend

What do you get when you mix fine art photography with a dash of funky and garnish it with loads of style?  This week’s Qe “it girl”, of course! Beth Cummings of Diffraction jewelry explains what a typical weekend looks like for her. Get ready to fall in love!

QUiD: Describe your most memorable weekend for us.

Beth: Recently my husband and I celebrated our first anniversary and he planned the most amazing weekend for the two of us and it was all a complete surprise! (which is pretty incredible since he is incapable of keeping a secret) He and I both love taking road trips, just taking off and seeing new places in a slower more intimate way. So, we drove to Milwaukee and visited the art museum there which was having this AMAZING interactive art exhibit and we stayed in a beautiful Bed and Breakfast on a sustainable farm. Just a wonderful romantic weekend!

Qe: What is your favorite thing about the weekends?

Beth: Sleep! I love sleeping in and waking up with no agenda and no where I HAVE to go. Just lazing around in bed with my husband and then making pancakes or waffles or something. It’s the best time to rejuvenate! And in Chicago there are always a million different street festivals and events that are completely free to take in and wander through.

Qe: What do you do creatively over the weekend?
Beth: The weekend tends to be the time I most often take the photographs that then eventually appear in my jewelry. Whether on a roadtrip or just running around town I always carry along my camera, you never know what great shot you might see!

Qe: Where is your favorite place to go/shop on the weekends?
Beth: Well, if there is a craft fair I’m there! I love shopping handmade and seeing all the new and creative items artists are coming up with. It’s great meeting and talking with the people who make the products you love and seeing the time and dedication and creativity that go into them just by talking with them about their passions.

Qe: What/where do you like to eat on weekends?
Beth: Two guilty pleasures that only happen on the weekends. One, Kitch’n on Roscoe, it’s this AMAZING retro dinner with fantastically modern takes on traditional breakfast. I’m physically unable to pass up their Crab Cakes Benedict with spicy Cornbread hash. It’s to die for. (My husband loves their cult hit Fried Chicken and Waffles with an ancho honey bbq sauce) Two, Hot Doug’s, this addictive gourmet hot dog place with crazy combinations and duck fat french fries. Eat there, your life will change.

Qe: What’s the best place you’ve ever visited on the weekend?
Beth: A few years back we decided to take a roadside attractions roadtrip around Illinois and Wisconsin. We saw a lot of really strange things and above all my favorites were the Robot Museum in the Wisconsin Dells and the giant pink elephant wearing glasses sculpture that is featured in some of my jewelry. I just love seeing all the weird attractions like the Largest Ball of Twine or Circus Museum. It’s such a rich collection of offbeat Americana.

Qe: Tell us a bit about your wares.

Beth:  I started Diffraction in May 2008 as a way to combine my fine art photography with jewelry in order to share it in a smaller more accessible way. The images are printed directly on a thick plastic and hand cut and shaped. I take pride in the intricate cutouts featured in some of the fruit and leaf pieces. I create all my pieces in my home studio in Chicago. It’s the perfect little space!

Over the Weekend

Boy. Do I have a great seller for you to meet today. We are the perfect match. I love vintage. She sells it. Heaven! Everyone, meet Mona.

QUiD: Describe your most memorable weekend (recent or just a fun one you remember).

Mona: I have many memorable weekends. I think the ones I love to reflect on are when I go out treasure hunting. Yes, that is what I call it. I go to estate sales or auctions often. I just love the idea of never knowing
what I might find. What will grab my eye. I love to collect antiques and sell them too. I hate missing a sale, because then I am wondering “what did I miss”.  I think my shop reflects my most ardent passion.

Q: What is your favorite thing about the weekends?

M: My Favorite thing about the weekends are of course the sales and getting out to enjoy the
weather when possible. I love walking by the river. I love to sit and listen to the water gurgling and all the sounds of nature.

Q: What do you do creatively over the weekend?

M: I love to cook mostly during the weekends. I love to plan an nice big Sunday dinner complete with
a homemade pie or cake.

Q: What is your favorite thing to wear on weekends?

M: My favorite thing to wear on the weekends is my Jeans. I am always comfy in my jeans.

Q: What’s the best place you’ve ever visited on the weekend?

M: The best place I ever visited on the weekend would have to be with my grand children.

Over the Weekend

I’m a HUGE fan of color. So when I came across this etsy seller, I just had to share her with you all! Please enjoy!

Describe your most memorable weekend (recent or just a fun one you remember).

My most memorable weekend must be the one when my comic book presentation took place. There were my boyfriend, friends, teachers from my art school…I autographed a few books. I was wearing a black shirt and red polka dot skirt. It was a lot of fun!

What is your favorite thing about the weekends?
I’m able to relax a little bit, take my dog for a long walk. And it’s when I can do creative work.

What do you do creatively over the weekend?
I can put my hands on my beads, wire, fabric and thimbles. I also grab my pencils and paint brushes and create some illustrations.

What is your favorite thing to wear on weekends?
If I’m in the house I like to wear comfortable clothing, pants and t-shirt. When I go out it’s time to wear patterned skirts and dresses, put on a little bit of make-up.

What do you like to eat on weekends?
One of the things I like to eat is seafood. I spend a bit of time cooking, trying new dishes. I also love to do desserts. Whatever is Portuguese, Italian or Japanese food, it’s when I can have a relaxed meal.

What’s the best place you’ve ever visited on the weekend?
It’s hard to choose only one place.
The first thing that springs to my mind is visiting Évora, a Portuguese southern city, during the winter. Me and my boyfriend visited some odd place called “Capela dos Ossos”, which means “Bones Chapel”. One part of the chapel is entirely covered with bones and lots of skulls. It is supposed to be a reminder of our own ephemerity. And of course, we ate good food, great cheese and wine. It was a great weekend!

Over the Weekend

When you think of the finest in the art of upcycling, beginning today you’ll think Erin Thompson of Dinner Time Chimes. With her love for the outdoors (you’ll LOVE her photos) and a smattering of smart-girl ingenuity, she has developed a unique approach to salvaging practically everything (including old workboots)!

Describe your most memorable weekend

My husband and I spent an entire weekend several months ago hitting every auction, thrift store, yard sale that we could find in our county. It was a mini road trip of the sorts, but we had a purpose… silverware! I’d run almost completely out of supplies to make windchimes, but boy did we have fun finding new items to challenge us and keep us busy for quite a while that weekend!

What is your favorite thing about the weekends?
Being able to get away from the computer and “day job” to enjoy the outdoors and do as I please.

What do you do creatively over the weekend?
I’ve got to stay busy so I’ll usually polish silverware while we watch a movie on Sunday afternoon or my husband watches football. I have to save the windchime assembly for later, since they can get a bit loud!

What is your favorite thing to wear on weekends?
Comfy clothes, but specifically ones that don’t matter if they get dirt or a little paint on them!

What do you like to eat on weekends?
Lately it’s a quick bite to eat for every meal on Saturday whether it’s something we whip up or grab at the local diner. We’ve been working hard remodeling the house we recently purchased so every minute on Saturday is packed full of projects at the house. Sundays are a much slower pace with church, lunch with my husband’s family followed by a relaxing afternoon.

What’s the best place you’ve ever visited on the weekend?
Sneaking off to the beach for a long weekend with our camper is the best! A quiet campground with absolutely no agenda for us is the perfect stress relief.

Whimsy is the word when it comes to the beautiful etsy shop, Designs by Vanessa. I came upon her by chance and am so pleased for you to get to know her and her delightful wares. Enjoy!

Q: Describe your most memorable weekend (recent or just a fun one you remember).

DBV: A weekend that sticks out in my mind is when my husband and I spent the day at a Kite Festival here in Austin. There were tons of kites that filled the sky and it was such an amazing sight to see. I took my camera with me and got some great shots. One of those shots actually ended up on the local news for a weather photo contest…my 5 minutes of fame!

Q: What is your favorite thing about the weekends?

DBV: When I’m not working, my favorite thing is just hanging out in my pj’s all morning while working on my crafts! I also love dragging my hubby to local bead stores to browse their selections (this is probably my husband’s least favorite thing about the weekend).

Q: What do you do creatively over the weekend?

DBV: I work full time in the foster/adoption field so I do most of my creative work on the weekends. My two current obsessions are jewelry and paper goods but I do a little of everything.

Q: What is your favorite thing to wear on weekends?

DBV: I’m a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl but I do enjoy getting dressed up for a special occasion.

Q: What do you like to eat on weekends? My husband and I love to try new local restaurants on weekends. Austin, TX has some awesome hole in the wall restaurants. If you are ever in the area, I highly recommend Vivo and Polvo’s for tex-mex!

Q: What’s the best place you’ve ever visited on the weekend?

DBV: The great thing about living in Austin is that it is surrounded by lots of great weekend getaway locations. My husband and I try to visit San Antonio at least monthly to do something different and we always have so much fun strolling along the River Walk.

Ahhh…here it is, Monday again. To help ease your back to work blues, it’s time to meet our first ever featured etsy seller! If you don’t know what etsy is, you’re completely missing out on something awesome! Think ebay meets cool handmade stuff in a very chic and suave boutique-like environment. Yeah, it basically rocks.

So meet ChristopherandTia. Well, mostly Tia. This chick knows how to rock out a recipe card like you won’t believe! And she does it all by hand, which is even more rockstar of her! You can check out their shop here, and read all about her weekend rituals below!

Hand Cut Creation from ChristopherandTia

Q: So tell us about your most memorable weekend.
C&T: This past weekend our daughter turned 2 years old. And for the first time in months it was raining. We made gluten free vegan cupcakes, and opened presents like there was no tomorrow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Eleanore that happy. So it was by far the most memorable weekend thus far.

Q: What’s the best place you’ve ever visited on the weekend?

C&T: When we lived in Portland we used to take weekend trips to the Oregon Coast. Seaside was our favorite place in the world to go. We’d always listen to the Goonies soundtrack on the way.

Q: What do you like to do creatively on weekends?

C&T: Well this weekend, we’re planning on making 3 or 4 new boxes, so I’m really looking forward to that. Plus I get to wear my favorite apron. Its a win win situation.

Ikea has Finally Done it

I thought it would be great fun to get to know a few of my fashion favorites in a more personal manner. The idea is to have a few of my favorite etsy sellers fill us in on “what they did over the weekend”. Fun, eh?

Just so you can learn a bit more about me…I’ll start.

This weekend, the hubby and I made a much needed trip to Ikea in Dallas for storage supplies. My crafting has officially taken over the apartment and I’m going bonkers! So off we went (in our “vintage” jeep), bouncing our way to the blue and yellow swedish monster.

Five hours later, there we were driving down the road with my newly appointed shelving system riding as the third passenger in the front seat. It’s official: Ikea has finally managed to separate me and my husband! lol! We had to spend the rest of the weekend literally yelling at one another through a particle board obstruction!

The hightlight of the weekend was when I found a great deal on a fabulous hotel. It’s called NYLO and has this great Urban Loft feel – complete with a fancy bed and concrete floors!

Oh…and I made a killer necklace to wear! When in the city, right?
